Allegan man dies after crashing into La Salle Township lagoon

Investigators believe speed was a factor in crash

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – An Allegan man died after his vehicle crashed into in a La Salle Township lagoon.

The crash was reported at 8:23 a.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2024 and happened in the area of Lakeshore Drive, south of Avenue I in La Salle Township.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said the driver has been identified as Robert Fuss, 52, of Allegan. Fuss was driving an olive green Subaru Outback southbound on Lakeshore Drive when he drove past the intersection of Avenue I and crashed into a lagoon.

When first responders got to the scene of the crash, they found Fuss dead in the water next to his car. Sheriff’s officials said speed appears to have been a factor in the crash.

According to a press release, it is unknown if Fuss was wearing a seat belt when he crashed into the lagoon. The Subaru’s airbags did not deploy.
