DETROIT – Looking for a special place to watch next week’s solar eclipse in Metro Detroit? A free watch party is happening along the Detroit Riverfront!

The moon will completely eclipse the sun in what’s known as a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8. Because nearly all of Michigan is not within the “path of totality,” the state will only see a partial eclipse.

---> Most of Michigan will see 99% of total solar eclipse. Is that enough?

Those hoping to catch a glimpse can join a free watch party at Cullen Plaza along the Detroit Riverfront starting at 2 p.m. Officials say the eclipse will come into view at about 1:58 p.m., and reach 99% totality in Detroit at about 3:14 p.m.

Those attending the watch party will have access to free eclipse-viewing glasses and snacks, officials said. The watch party -- hosted by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, Outdoor Adventure Center, and Huron Clinton Metroparks -- will also feature a large telescope for eclipse viewing.

Special eclipse glasses and snacks will be provided while supplies last.

People are encouraged to register before attending, though registration is not required. Registration "does not guarantee viewing glasses, which are available on a first come-first serve basis,” officials said.

The watch party will be canceled if it rains, or if there are severe storms at the time of the event. As of Friday, our 4Warn meteorologists say there will be clouds in Monday’s forecast, but probably not any rain in the afternoon.

If clouds block the view of the solar eclipse, at least there’s beautiful water to look at!
