Detroit Gateway sign welcoming visitors along I-94 installed

‘This is a new Detroit’

DETROIT – As of Tuesday, April 9, there are only 16 days left before the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit.

The makeover has already begun and the stage near Campus Martius is under construction. The first letter of the upcoming 10-foot-tall Detroit sign that will greet people along I-94 was installed Tuesday morning. The sign was completed early that afternoon.

The Fairmont Sign Company is behind the project and other signature signs such as the Fox Theatre and Madison Marquee.

While the sign along I-94 eastbound at Central Street and Cecil Avenue will welcome people into Detroit for the 2024 NFL Draft, city officials said the idea has been something they’ve been thinking of for years.

“I want them to erase all of the old images and thoughts about Detroit,” said Jessica Parker, Deputy Chief Operating Officer. “This is a new Detroit.”

The sign on I-96 is one of six signs that will be installed along Detroit’s entry points. The city is spending roughly $400,000 on the signs.
