How losing lottery ticket turned into $100,000 for Michigan man

51-year-old Ionia County man wins second-chance prize

A Michigan man ended up winning $100,000 this month thanks to a losing lottery ticket.

A 51-year-old Ionia County man earned entries into a drawing by scanning a losing 500X Money Maker ticket on the Michigan Lottery app.

“I’ve been scanning my non-winning tickets to earn entries into the second chance drawing,” he said.

His name was selected in a random drawing on April 4.

“When I checked my email, I saw one from the Michigan Lottery from a few days prior saying I won $100,000,” he said. “I called the lottery right away, but it was the weekend, so I had to wait until Monday to confirm I was the winner. I bet I called 10 times during the weekend, hoping I might get lucky and someone would be working overtime and answer the phone.”

The man visited Michigan Lottery headquarters and claimed his prize. He said he plans to buy tools, pay bills, and save the rest of the money.
