Safety session held for Ferndale cyclists after implementation of new bike lanes

Bicycle safety of concern after new lanes introduced

FERNDALE, Mich. – Bicyclists in Ferndale attended a safety session Wednesday following the implementation of new bi-directional bike lanes on Woodward Avenue.

Jeff Carek, a Ferndale Resident and the Education Director of the League of Michigan Bicyclists, led the session.

“Bicyclists are considered traffic that’s what a lot of people have a hard time wrapping their brain around,” Carek said.

Carek gave a presentation about overall bike safety when navigating roads and sidewalks.

The safety of bicyclists has been a talker in Ferndale since the new bi-directional bike lanes were installed.

A few weeks ago, a cyclist using the new bike lane collided with a car.

“Understand that this infrastructure exists; it’s not going anywhere, and (drivers) need to be cognizant that there is now another user group in your space and just watch out for them,” Carek said.
