Six Michigan cities are being recognized by the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization for leading the way in equality and inclusion for the state. Ann Arbor, Detroit, East Lansing, Grand Rapids, Ferndale and Lansing were designated “All-Stars” by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, in partnership with the Equality Federation, in its 10th annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI) released Thursday, Nov. 18.mlive.com

Dog, now named ‘Miracle,’ rescued from burning Michigan church
FERNDALE, MI – A dog has a new name and a new lease on life after being recued from a burning church in Oakland County. Firefighters from the Ferndale Fire Department, Madison Heights Fire Department and the Birmingham Fire Department responded to the vacant church in Royal Oak Township at 10 a.m. on Oct. 3. Upon inspection, a Madison Heights firefighter noticed there was a frightened dog among the blaze. The dog, newly named Miracle, managed to wedge through a small opening and escape with minor burns when approached by rescuers. “She just wanted to be loved.”Miracle was treated for her burns at the Oakland County Animal Shelter.mlive.com

Treyvon Lewis continues hot streak to lead Ferndale basketball to 51-43 win over Clarkston
FERNDALE, Mich. -- It is safe to say things are going Treyvon Lewis’ way on the basketball court lately. A game after Lewis scored 50 points in a win over Detroit Douglass, the 6-foot-5 junior guard led the way for the Ferndale boys basketball team on Wednesday night with 23 points in a 51-43 win over Clarkston. After collecting 12 points and 14 rebounds in the 60-53 win over Clarkston on Feb. 16, Lewis has been been scoring at a much higher clip. Lewis scored six points in a 12-0 run by Ferndale to open the second quarter, turning an 11-8 deficit to a 20-11 lead. DETROIT – Haith and Henry Johnson started Le’Host Hair in their basement and after years of hard work, they now have their products on the shelves of major stores. Le’Host products caught the eye of Walmart executives and the products now are on the shelves of the world’s largest retail store. She took the products she had been developing and selling at her brick-and-mortar store to Walmart, where she won a pitch contest to get her natural-hair and wig friendly products into stores. Suspect hits officer with vehicle, leads police on chase
HIGHLAND PARK, MI – A suspect who struck a police officer with a vehicle led police in a high-speed chase early Thursday before attempting to flee on foot. The incident began around 2 a.m. on Jan. 14 when a Highland Park Police officer was hit by a Dodge Ram pickup truck during a traffic stop, WWJ Newsradio 950 reports. Police pursued the vehicle through Highland Park and into Ferndale, where they lost sight of it. After city police lost the trail, a trooper spotted the vehicle on 8 Mile Road near Woodward Avenue. MSP is investigating the vehicle pursuit while Highland Park is handling the original incident, police said.mlive.com

Police chase that started in Hazel Park ends in violent crash in Ferndale
FERNDALE, Mich. – A police chase that started in Hazel Park ended with a violent crash in Ferndale on Friday. A white Hyundai Sonata was pulled over by police in Hazel Park for a traffic violation. The crash ended on the Ferndale side of 8 Mile Road, not far from the State Fairgrounds in Detroit. After the crash a man ran across the street and was taken into custody. His passenger ran further into Ferndale and is still at large.
Customers support Ferndale store through coronavirus pandemic
One Metro Detroit store decided to put safety first and the response from customers has been more than they ever imagined. Local businesses have had to make some tough decisions over the last few months, but one Ferndale store made the choice to close and customers are rewarding them for it. Emily and John Murray opened Modern Natural Baby on Nine Mile Road in 2009 after having a baby of their own. Their store was able to survive thanks to the loyal customers who shopped online and through social media. John Murray said they’ve been getting orders from customers that don’t have children or grandchildren because they want to support the store.
Biggest bar night of the year goes quiet amid Michigan’s COVID-19 restriction
Normally, Nine Mile Road would be flooded with people going from bar to bar and fighting for parking spots. With the current three-week restriction on bars and restaurants, things were low key. “It doesn’t feel like the day before Thanksgiving,” said Brandon Leclerc of Sterling Heights. Nearly 200 bars and restaurants in the city of Detroit applied for outdoor seating so they can earn some kind of revenue amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Detroit will still allow winter outdoor seating through a new set of permits.
Woman-run local coffee shop stays positive throughout the pandemic

Ferndale resident caught recording unclothed victims in restroom with hidden camera
FERNDALE, Mich. – Ferndale resident Tyler Tierney, 29, has been charged in connection with recording unclothed victims in a restroom with a hidden camera. Detectives identified and interviewed all the victims of the crimes. The investigation into Tierney’s recordings started in July of 2020. Tierney was arraigned today on five counts of surveilling an unclothed person. He was given a $20,000 personal bond and is scheduled to appear next on Nov. 23.
Detroit Man Charged In Ferndale 7-Eleven Armed Robbery
(CBS DETROIT) – A Detroit man has been charged after robbing a 7-Eleven in Ferndale and then committing a series of armed robberies at other 7-Eleven stores, according to police. Mark Diggs, 57, has been charged with one count of armed robbery, two counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, one count of felon in possession of a firearm, one count of carrying a concealed weapon. Ferndale Police say on Oct. 24 at 4:47 a.m. a Diggs entered the 7-Eleven store located near 9 Mile Road and Hilton. Investigation revealed Diggs went on to commit a series of armed robberies at other 7-Eleven stores in a two-day period in Macomb County. Diggs’ bond is set at $200,000 and he is set to appear in court Nov. 23 at 1 p.m.detroit.cbslocal.com

Otus Supply ramps up music performances with outdoor tent, livestream sessions

Otus Supply recently set up a tent in its parking lot which, will host live music and a small 50-person audience on weekends. The music will also be broadcast inside for guests eating in the dining rooms, where tables have been spread out for social distancing.Inside, the Parliament Room will host live music throughout the week, but without an audience. A recent cover story looked at some of the challenges that local restaurants face in reopening in an industry where profits in good times are already thin.
