The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will expand the Upper Falls day-use area at Tahquamenon Falls State Park.

Soon, a 900-foot-long boardwalk will go through an old-growth forest and provide views of the Upper Falls. The structure will also have benches.

Construction starts on Oct. 14 and is expected to be completed by Aug. 1, 2025. It was funded from the $3.275 million allocation in federal relief to make park renovations.

All other viewing areas of the Upper Falls will stay open during construction, said the DNR.

“The new, accessible boardwalk will replace the aging stairway structure that leads to the brink viewing platform,” said Kevin Dennis, Tahquamenon Falls State Park supervisor for the DNR Parks and Recreation Division. “Despite construction, the majority of the viewing area remains open and accessible this fall through next summer.”

The Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Pub will also remain open during the construction.
