A Dearborn Heights man died early Friday morning after rear-ending a gravel hauler that was parked on the shoulder of I-94 near Southfield Freeway, police said.

The two-vehicle crash happened at 12:25 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2025.

When Michigan State Police troopers arrived, they found a gravel hauler on the right shoulder and a pickup truck with heavy damage to its front in the right and center lanes.

Witnesses told troopers that the driver of the pickup, who has been identified as a 64-year-old Dearborn Heights man, rear-ended the gravel hauler.

At the time of the crash, the gravel hauler had been parked on the shoulder of the freeway due to mechanical issues.

The Dearborn Heights man was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no other injuries, according to police.

The area is currently closed for cleanup.

“Currently, it is unknown why the pick up driver ended up driving on the shoulder,” said Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw. “Once medical examiner reports and other evidence is examined, we may have a better idea as of why. The freeway is currently closed for clean up.”
