TAYLOR, Mich. – Have you ever felt sad or just needed a little motivation to help boost your day?
One young woman in Taylor, Alyssa Patrias, has made it her mission to pass out motivational handwritten cards to complete strangers.
This daily endeavor is not just about the cards; it’s about spreading happiness and positivity.
Patrias, 28, who has Down syndrome, has been creating these heartfelt cards since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Her mother, Sue Cameron, recalls how it all started.
Patrias noticed the workers at her local grocery store looking sad and wanted to do something to brighten their day.
“She said, ‘I feel bad for them. Can I make them a card?’” said Sue. “So, we took maybe five cards in just to give to the people that she knew there.”
The response was overwhelming. The grocery store workers were thrilled to receive Patrias’ cards, which encouraged her to create even more.
“Just to see people’s faces light up when they would get them. Some of them would start crying. Some would say, ‘Can I give you a hug?’” Sue said.
What began as a small gesture has blossomed into a remarkable initiative.
Patrias now produces approximately 40 cards per day, totaling over 16,000 cards distributed over the past six years.
Each card is adorned with her unique artistic touch, featuring drawings of ladybugs, flowers, jellyfish, and more.
“Sometimes I draw like a dog and a cat,” Patrias said, showcasing her creativity.
Patrias credits her artistic skills to her grandfather, saying, “Let’s just say I learned this from my mother’s dad.”
In addition to her card-making, Patrias is preparing for the Miss Amazing pageant, a showcase for girls and women of all ages with different disabilities.
“I just love making new friends, and I love to be on stage,” Patrias expressed in her excitement about the upcoming event in Chicago this July.
Patrias’ sister has also contributed to her mission by writing a coloring book titled Have a Happy Day: The Story of Alyssa’s Happy Cards.
Patrias will be signing copies of this book and handing out her cards at the Willow Spice Company, located at 39670 Willow Rd, New Boston, MI 48164, from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 7.
This event will also serve as a fundraiser to help send Patrias to the Miss Amazing pageant.
“I’d love to see you all!” Patrias invites everyone to join her.
