The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said a Pontiac woman was driving an SUV northbound on Melrose Avenue approaching Pennsylvania Avenue when, at the same time, Anthony Thomas Cowgill, 25, was driving an ATV eastbound on Pennsylvania Avenue approaching Melrose Avenue.
According to the sheriff’s office, Cowgill ran the stop sign at the intersection and struck the SUV as it was passing through.
Cowgill was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His passenger on the ATV, a 31-year-old woman from Georgia, was also sent to the hospital for her injuries. The sheriff’s office said neither Cowgill nor his passenger were wearing helmets, and the ATV was not legal for roadway use.
The driver of the SUV was not injured.
“Once again, a preventable tragedy has occurred,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. “An individual illegally operating an ATV lost his life, and his passenger was seriously injured. Incidents like this underscore the importance of safety and proper equipment use to help avoid such heartbreaking outcomes.”
