Video: Alcohol suspected in high-speed crash into Michigan store

6 people were in the car at the time, police say

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Police believe alcohol played a role in a Kalamazoo crash that caused significant damage to a downtown store.

It happened at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6.

According to authorities, an officer saw a speeding vehicle heading eastbound on Michigan Avenue that crashed into a storefront before they could turn on their police lights.

Surveillance footage of the crash can be watched in the video player above.

While the vehicle had six people inside, only the driver was injured. A 22-year-old man was taken to a hospital to be treated for multiple cuts and was released.

Police said the car had the driver, two teen boys, a teen girl, a 34-year-old woman and an unknown person inside when it crashed. The sixth person reportedly was able to run off before police could make contact.

The Kalamazo Department of Public Safety believes alcohol contributed to the crash.

The building is not permitted to be occupied until repairs are completed.
