FBI raid in Dearborn targets suspect in 2021 Westland bowling alley shooting

Raid follows forensic analysis of bullet casings

DEARBORN, Mich. – An FBI raid in Dearborn early Tuesday morning was connected to a 2021 shooting at a Westland bowling alley.

Police agencies executed a search warrant at a home in the area of Oxford and Queen streets, near Telegraph and Outer Drive, at about 6 a.m. on Nov. 18.

Local 4 video shows parts of the Dearborn home in pieces after the FBI, with the help of Dearborn Police, raided Gregory Augusta Powell’s home and began searching in the early morning hours.

Neighbors said they woke up before sunrise to flashing lights, “booms and bangs,” and described seeing federal agents essentially busting the door off, then leaving with weapons and other evidence.

“Very scary -- it was a lot of flashing lights. Flash bangs. It sounded like gunshots,” said Drew Whiteley, a neighbor. “After they were in custody, it looked like they used flash bangs, searched the house. searched the garage.”

Dearborn Police told Local 4 the raid was connected to a recent felonious assault in its city, but according to federal authorities, it also stems from a complaint just unsealed Nov. 18, 2025.

Powell is now facing federal charges of possession of ammunition. He appeared in court on Tuesday afternoon after the raid.

According to authorities, Powell was arrested and convicted of attempted murder in 2006. He was sentenced to 12-20 years and was released at some point before April 2021.

As a convicted felon, he is ineligible to possess firearms or ammunition.

2021 Westland bowling shooting

On April 24, 2021, a shooting took place just after midnight at the Vision Lanes Bowling alley in Westland. One of the victims told first responders he got into an altercation with an unknown man, who pulled out a gun and fired.

Further investigation revealed Powell as the suspected gunman. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Powell entering the bowling alley, the altercation, the shooting and Powell leaving with the gun in hand.

Powell allegedly left his ID at the bowling alley too.

He was arrested later that day. Authorities said Powell told them he was at the bowling alley and there was an altercation and when one man approached him, Powell grabbed a handgun he had stashed in his girlfriend’s purse before shooting at the man.

He reportedly admitted to police he had bought the gun off the street in Lansing a few months prior to the shooting and acknowledged he is ineligible to have a gun as a convicted felon.

After Powell was released on parole in February 2025, bullet casings from the scene were analyzed. Federal authorities concluded on Nov. 13, 2025, that the ammunition was manufactured outside Michigan.

Powell now faces federal charges of felon in possession of ammunition. He remains behind bars ahead of a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 19.
