MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Macomb County man is facing charges after he left his gun unsecured, which led to the death of a child.

James Beattie, 54, of Macomb Township, was charged with firearms, safe storage violations, premises under individual’s control, minor present, and inflicted death upon self or another. This charge is punishable by up to 15 years in prison, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

Deputies were called to a Macomb Township home on Friday, Nov. 21, 2025.

Authorities say Beattie had left his firearm unsecured, which led to a minor present inside the home being shot.

The child was taken to a hospital and died from their injuries several days later.

Officials didn’t release any additional details about the shooting or how the man and the victim are connected.

Beattie was arraigned on Tuesday, Dec. 16, and was issued a $50,000 personal recognizance bond.

The man was also ordered to surrender any firearms and ammunition to the police.

Beattie’s probable cause conference is scheduled for Dec. 29.

“This is a profoundly sobering situation. My prayers are with the child and his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. “Michigan’s Safe Storage of Firearms law exists to prevent tragedies such as youth suicide and gun violence, and my office has worked diligently to educate the public on its requirements,” Lucido said. “When firearms are kept in a home where minors may be present, the law requires that they be secured in a locked safe or rendered inoperable with a gun lock.”
