“This is the second incident of this kind this winter,” SHAES said in a social media post. “We are again appealing to people to stay off the Lake Michigan ice shelves and pier heads.”
SHAES said they received a call about a person falling into the lake while walking on the South Beach snow shelves on Jan. 21, 2026.
“The Lake Michigan shoreline snow shelves and ice-covered piers are beautiful and inviting,” SHAES responders said in a post on Jan. 21. “And very dangerous! SHAES last night responded to a report of a person falling into the lake while walking on the South Beach snow shelves. Fortunately, there was a happy ending as the person self-rescued. Be Smart! Stay Off!”
