ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan is warning students that their personal information may have been exposed following a cyberattack involving “Canvas”, an online platform widely used for coursework, grades, and class communication.
In a letter sent to students, university leaders said they disabled access to Canvas “out of an abundance of caution” after detecting the security incident.

Officials also urged students to log out of their accounts immediately while the investigation continues.
Canvas is commonly used by students to check grades, submit assignments, and message instructors.
University officials said their teams are actively investigating the scope of the breach and working to determine what information may have been accessed.
The university did not specify how many students could be affected or what types of data may have been exposed.
Canvas is also used by other institutions across Michigan, including Wayne State University and Eastern Michigan University.
As of Thursday (May 7), there was no confirmation that those schools were impacted by the same incident.
University officials said they will provide updates as more information becomes available and continue monitoring for any further security concerns.
