ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – Hockey players with special needs from across the country laced up their skates and hit the ice Saturday, learning new skills and making friends along the way.

The clinic was put on by the American Special Hockey Association and Blue Line Hockey Development at a St. Clair Shores ice arena.

Athletes traveled from New York, Ohio and Michigan to participate in the clinic.

“You know it started off with a little bit of traction and we max out every year for at least the last three years. Our first year was all local athletes and then it just started spreading and spreading,” said Troy Taylor, board president of the American Special Hockey Association.

Michigan Flyers athlete Anthony Maniaci was clearly in his element on the ice.

“These people are just awesome, you know, coming from other states, they’re just great,” Maniaci said.

Even a former NHL player was feeling the burn keeping up with the determined athletes.

“They’re skating and I’m skating with them like man I’m getting tired,” said Chad Larose, a former NHL player who volunteered at the clinic. “Even when they are tired, a few of them they’re still going and going, so yeah it’s awesome to see.”

Marcia Gilman of Flower City Special Hockey summed up what the day meant for participants.

“They love learning new skills. They love making new friends. It’s just a great time for them,” Gilman said.

The clinic is something athletes look forward to as they continue to perfect their craft.
