Man with 9 prior alcohol offenses failed to abide by ‘restricted’ license, police say

SUMPTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Sumpter Township Police say they conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for heavily tinted windows, and found driver in violation of his license.

The traffic stop occurred at around 6 p.m. on May 22.

The front windshield was heavily tinted and in violation of Michigan law, police say.

During the stop the 42-year-old driver, registered to the car was identified to have a license with “restricted status”, police say.

Restricted status allows the driver to only operate vehicles with breath alcohol ignition interlock device.

Police say there was no interlock device installed in the vehicle.

The driver was briefly detained, issued an appearance citation, and his vehicle was impounded, police say.

Police say it was discovered the driver had an extensive criminal history, including drug offenses, fleeing and eluding police, resisting or assaulting a police officer, and nine prior alcohol related offenses on his driving record.

His drunk driving convictions date back to 2004, with the latest occurring on February 11, 2025, police say.

After his last conviction, the driver had been accepted into a sobriety court program in Washtenaw County and was granted a restricted driver’s license with an interlock requirement on September 12, 2025, police say.
