Sumpter Township residents asked to avoid outside burning amid high wildfire risk

SUMPTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Authorities are urging residents of Sumpter Township to avoid “outside burning of any kind” as the region is considered at high risk for wildfires Thursday. According to the Sumpter Township Police Department, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has identified the township area as being at very high risk of wildfires due to dry ground conditions. Residents are being asked to avoid any outdoor burning activities to prevent a wildland fire. Authorities say they have responded to several wildland and/or field fires in the surrounding area over the past week, and five within Sumpter Township over the last two days. Sumpter Township police say that residents whose “negligent activity leads to wildland fire and subsequent property destruction can be held liable, both criminally and civilly.”To learn more about fire safety, visit the DNR’s website right here.

Sumpter Township quadruple homicide suspect charged with first-degree murder

The suspect in a quadruple homicide in Sumpter Township has been charged with first-degree murder on Wednesday. Raymond Lee Bailey, 37, of Kinross, Michigan, is facing four counts of first-degree murder and four counts of felony firearm in the killing of four people over the weekend. At about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, police responded to the homicide scene in the 24000 block of Martinsville in Sumpter Township. The four victims shot and killed by a handgun have been identified as: Laura Tanner, 35, and her sister Sarah Grupa, 38, of Detroit; Forrest Sampson, 28 and Neil Sampson, 31, of Van Buren Township. Detectives then identified Bailey, the ex-boyfriend of one of the deceased women, as a possible suspect.

He was arraigned Wednesday from a hospital bed. Authorities said he shot four people to death in a home in Sumpter Township, including Baileys ex girlfriend Laura Tanner. Back in November of 2019, Bailey had been charged with domestic violence with intent to do bodily harm.

Detectives identified 37-year-old Raymond Lee Bailey of Sumpter Township, the ex-boyfriend of one of the woman, as a possible suspect. Man beats Wayne County homeowner with tire iron during break-in, police say

SUMPTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Michigan man broke into a Wayne County house and beat the homeowner with a tire iron, even chasing him outside to continue the attack, according to police. Norman Johnson, 31, of Willis, is accused of breaking into a home in the 23000 block of Elwell Road Road in Sumpter Township. Officials said Johnson broke in Saturday and beat the 26-year-old homeowner with a tire iron, causing serious injuries to the man’s head and torso. When the homeowner left the house, Johnson chased him and continued to attack him in the yard, police said. Johnson was taken into custody but denied knowing about the break-in or the attack on Elwell Road, police said.
