School is out. So are the screens.
Device usage is expected to rise among children, but there’s a growing movement of families pushing back. Some parents are swapping devices for outdoor adventures, books and imaginative play.
April White, a mother from Farmington Hills, said her family makes a point to start every day outside.
“That’s kind of how we do it,” White said. “We start our day outside and sometimes we just never even feel the temptation to get to the screens.”
A 2023 study examined how devices can impact a child’s language development, social interactions and academic performance. Clinical psychologist Dr. Rose Moten said the evidence is growing and concerning.
Out-of-state woman arrested hours after robbing Comerica Bank in Sterling Heights
A woman was arrested hours after a bank robbery in Sterling Heights, following a multi-agency investigation that led authorities to recover most of the stolen money.
The incident occurred on Monday, June 15, when Sterling Heights police responded at about 2:41 p.m. to a report of a robbery at Comerica Bank, 43020 Van Dyke Ave.
Officers said they arrived within two minutes and confirmed that no injuries had been reported. Police said the woman handed a note to a bank teller demanding money. No weapon was displayed or seen during the robbery.
Oakland County man tackles 320-mile Ultraman to honor mother, support HOPE shelters
An Oakland County man is preparing to tackle his first self-supported Ultraman, using the three-day endurance event to raise money for HOPE Shelters in memory of his mother.
Ryan Walker of West Bloomfield said he has been running for as long as he can remember, starting with 5K races as a child alongside his grandfather.
In 2018, while recovering from a broken leg, Walker set a goal of running six miles a week—a routine that helped him rebuild his fitness and eventually led to longer distances.
“I set a goal of running just six miles a week, and I was like, if I can be consistent and run — just do six miles a week — that’ll be 300 by the end of the year, and I ran my first half marathon that year,” Walker said.
Michigan man arrested in child sex abuse case facing more charges after child porn found on phone
A Genesee County man who is facing charges in an alleged child sex abuse case is facing more charges after officers found child pornography on his phone.
Jordan Craig, 19, was charged with one count of accosting a child for immoral purposes, one count of using a computer to commit a crime, one count of capturing or distributing an image of an unclothed person and seven counts of child sexually abusive activity.
According to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Craig allegedly tried to meet with a person he believed was a child for sex on Feb. 4.

A 4Warn Weather Alert has been issued for this afternoon and evening across Southeast Michigan as a potent storm system brings the threat of heavy rain, flash flooding, and severe thunderstorms.
New this morning, a Flood Watch has been issued for Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties through 4:00 a.m. Thursday. The watch highlights an increasing concern for excessive rainfall that could lead to flooding of roads, low-lying areas, and poor drainage locations. Keep checking your basements!
