Cyclist killed in crash involving Oakland County Road Commission vehicle in Ferndale

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is on the scene investigating.

FERNDALE, MICH. – A 33-year-old cyclist is dead after a collision involving an Oakland County Road Commission vehicle in Ferndale on Thursday afternoon.

The crash occurred just after 1 p.m. on northbound Woodward Avenue near College Street, a few blocks south of Nine Mile Road.

Witnesses reported seeing an Oakland County Road Commission vehicle turn right onto College Street and strike the cyclist while they were riding in the bike lane near the vacant Tim Horton’s.

The cyclist -- only identified as a 33-year-old Ferndale resident -- died at the scene.

“We were very saddened to learn of the crash involving one of our drivers and a bicyclist,” reads a statement from the road commission. “Our hearts go out to both the family of the cyclist and to our driver. We are currently investigating the situation and have no further information at this point.”

The intersection remains closed as the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office investigates.
