Metro Detroit road crews are starting to prepare before the season’s first winter storm hits the area this week.

It’s going to be rough on the roads later this week as forecasters expect a massive two day snow event.

Heavy snow moves out of Metro Detroit, making way for bitterly cold conditions with icy roads a concern overnight and into the morning as temperatures plummet overnight.

Clearing the roads of all the snow is a big job, and it’s becoming an even more challenging task with the ongoing worker shortages. Some Road Commissions have to look outside the department to get things done.

The snow has been constant, and the roads have been slick as slush builds up along the highways, making for some real problems near Oakman Boulevard and Jefferies Freeway.

The Road Commission for Oakland County is looking to hire 24 part-time seasonal drivers and laborers to assist their full-time staff for winter this year.

CLARKSTON, Mich. – A Clarkston man became concerned when he noticed a pothole on a busy road, so he tested its depth with a PVC pipe. “I thought it was a regular pothole, and the more I inspected it, there was no bottom,” said resident Josh Turcsak. Turcsak grabbed a long pipe from his garage and recorded a video of him lowering the pipe into the hole on Clarkston Road -- and that video went viral. The Oakland County Road Commission also said there is no danger to the public and that the road is not going to collapse.

If you’re on the road and you see a snow plow make sure to give the driver some space. Pull over to the side of the road if you can so they can move around you, officials said.

Some people think roundabouts are easy, while other people think theyre frighting. 1 roundabout with the most number of crashes was at Orchard Lake Road at 14 Mile Road in Farmington Hills with 164 crashes. For answers, Local 4 went to the Oakland County Road Commission, which has the most roundabouts in the entire state. What we found was there are a lot of crashes with property damage, minor damage, disabling damage and sometimes injuries. There have been dozens of roundabout safety and studies found roundabouts bring a 75 percent reduction in serious injury crashes and a 90 percent reduction in fatal crashes.
