OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – A 59-year-old Sterling Heights man was arrested after police responded to a report of a possible drunk driver in the parking lot of a Planet Fitness.

Police said they located a vehicle matching the suspect’s description, which was driving slowly through the parking lot.

When officers spoke with the driver, they said they observed signs of possible intoxication, including slurred speech and an odor of alcohol.

A search of the vehicle’s front passenger area found 11 empty vodka bottles and one partially full bottle, according to police.

Police said the driver was unable to complete most sobriety evaluations because of his level of intoxication and refused to take a preliminary breath test.

Officials said he was then arrested.

After being taken into custody, police said the man told them there was a firearm inside the vehicle.

Police said they located a loaded handgun in the center console.

Officials said the man had a valid Concealed Pistol License.

Because of the man’s level of intoxication, police said an ambulance was called, and he was transported to Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak for medical treatment.

Police said the man was read his chemical test rights and agreed to a blood draw, which was completed by medical personnel at the hospital.

The driver was later released to the hospital pending the issuance of a warrant.

Further details, including potential charges, were not immediately available.
