DETROIT – A man was fatally shot by police after officers serving a search warrant were met with gunfire on Detroit’s west side.
Detroit police Deputy Chief Arnold Williams said officers were serving a search warrant around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday (June 25) connected to a felonious assault investigation that happened earlier this month.
Williams said officers entered the location and encountered a person who fired shots at them.
“They were met with a subject that was firing shots at them,” said Williams. “They returned fire, fatally wounding the subject.”
Police said the incident remains under preliminary investigation and additional details will be released later.
Williams said investigators reviewed body camera footage at the scene, and the video appeared to confirm the initial account given by police.
He said the investigation will continue, with the Michigan State Police expected to handle the review as part of the homicide task force process.
Police have not released the identity of the officer who fired shots or provided details about the officer’s experience.
Williams said the man officers were looking for was the only registered occupant of the home.
The investigation remains ongoing.
