Some neighbors told Local 4 they heard more than a dozen shots, while others were stunned and thought they were simply fireworks.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said it responded at 11:11 p.m. Saturday to reports of a shooting near the intersection of Court Street and Clemens Street, where the neighborhood gathering was underway.

When deputies arrived, they found five people suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel responded, and all five victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Police said the victims include two juveniles and three adults. Their identities and medical conditions have not been released as investigators continue to notify family members and gather additional information.

The shooting unfolded during what neighbors described as a long-running annual block party that typically draws hundreds of people.

“It was every year,” one neighbor told Local 4 anonymously. “The block party has… bounce houses and everything, food trucks, so it really is nice — a nice turnout.”

“It was just too many people not from this area,” another neighbor said. “It’s usually a big thing for the kids in the neighborhood, you know, but people were out — I saw cups. I’m like, they’re drinking. So, yeah, I stayed in for this one.”

The neighbor said the celebration began around 3 p.m. and normally wraps up shortly after the Fourth of July fireworks are set off.

Instead, the festivities ended in chaos. One neighbor and partygoer told Local 4 the gunfire erupted suddenly and they did not hear what lead up to it.

“You just heard shooting, and everybody just took off running, so you didn’t know what was going on,” the neighbor said. “There was definitely shooting back and forth.”

The neighbor said they heard more than a dozen gunshots. Another neighbor, who also wished to remain anonymous, said the same adding that a couple cars with bullet holes in them were towed away. Local 4 saw bullet holes in the window of a residence off of Court and several in a tree.

Detectives and crime scene investigators continued processing the scene Sunday, conducting interviews and collecting evidence to determine what led to the shooting.

As the investigation remains in its early stages, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call (586) 307-9412. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers. That number is 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
