Nearly 80,000 DTE Energy customers remain without power across Southeast Michigan following Friday’s severe storms.
The utility says it expects to restore service to about 95% of impacted customers by the end of the day on Monday.
Many residents have reported down trees or power lines and localized flooding after Friday’s severe weather, which saw powerful thunderstorms and winds reaching upwards of 60 mph in communities like Royal Oak, Hazel Park, Detroit, West Bloomfield, Dearborn, Ann Arbor and Plymouth Township.
The Detroit Zoo also announced on Saturday that it would be closed for the holiday due to a power outage.
As crews continue restoration efforts, many viewers have reached out to Local 4 with questions about how DTE decides which areas get power restored first, what resources are available for customers who depend on electricity for critical medical equipment, and whether the company reimburses customers for food spoiled during an outage.
To answer those questions, we spoke with Brad Craig, DTE’s storm emergency preparedness and response director.
