Detroit officials respond after holiday weekend videos show street racing, crowds, fireworks concerns

City officials said the behavior created safety concerns and vowed to take action against those responsible

DETROIT – The city of Detroit is responding after several dangerous situations were reported over the holiday weekend, with videos circulating on social media showing large crowds blocking streets, street racing activity in neighborhoods, and what appeared to be fireworks being fired near groups of people.

City officials said the behavior created safety concerns and vowed to take action against those responsible.

“I have instructed DPD to take all the necessary steps to hold those responsible for this type of blatant disregard for the rule of law,” said Mayor Mary Sheffield.

On Monday (July 6), senior director Teferi Brent from the mayor’s new Office of Neighborhood and Community Safety discussed the city’s response and what steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents.

Officials said they are focused on addressing unsafe gatherings, enforcing laws, and working with communities to maintain safe public spaces following the holiday weekend incidents.

The Detroit Police Department continues to investigate incidents reported across the city and is encouraging residents to report illegal activity.
