The county assigned Orion Township Substation and Orion Township Fire Department to respond to the call.

Police say first to arrive was Deputy Brandon Musse, an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

According to authorities Deputy Musse immediately observed the two boys, positioned a trash can under the window, and then used the height to help both boys through the window before conditions inside the home worsened.

Firefighters say they were able to enter the home, rescue the boys’ family dog trapped inside, and extinguish the fire before it spread further.

According to authorities paramedics transported the two boys, a 10-year-old Orion Township boy and his 12-year-old brother, to Trinity Health Hospital. Both boys have been said to have been treated for smoke inhalation and released.

The fire remains under investigation.

“This incident could have had a far different outcome,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard. “Deputy Musse immediately recognized that every second mattered. His ability to rapidly assess the situation, improvise with the tools available and act without hesitation allowed these two young boys to escape what could have become a tragic situation.”
