OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – An Oakland County sheriff’s deputy was honored for his quick thinking that helped rescue two children trapped during a house fire in Orion Township.
Deputy Brandon Musse received the Citizen of the Month Award for his actions during the July 10 fire at a home on Meadowbrook Court.
When first responders arrived, they learned two children were trapped on the second floor of the home.
According to officials, Musse grabbed a trash can and used it as a step to reach the children, helping them climb out through a second-story window to safety.
The family said Musse’s quick actions likely prevented the situation from becoming far more tragic.
Firefighters were then able to enter the home, rescue the family’s dog and extinguish the fire before it spread further.
The father of the two kids, Michael Knight, said Musse’s heroic efforts were monumental.
“Nobody does this looking for recognition and thinking that this is a monumental thing,” said Knight. “When you’re on the other side of it, it is absolutely a monumental thing that you’ll remember for the rest of your life, so I can’t thank you enough.”
Officials praised Musse’s calm response and decisive actions, saying they played a critical role in safely rescuing the children before conditions inside the home worsened.
The cause of the fire has not been released.
