CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Detroit man who pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and felony firearm charges for the accidental shooting death of his 13-year-old sister was sentenced this week to two years in prison.
Police say that Jay-Veon McKinney, 25, was playing with two handguns at a Canton Township apartment on July 29, 2025, when one of them discharged, striking his sister in the chest.

Emergency personnel arrived within minutes and attempted to save her, police said, but she succumbed to her injuries and died at the scene.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged McKinney with involuntary manslaughter, felony firearm and discharging a firearm causing injury or death, stating that the shooting was a result of “gross negligence in handling a loaded firearm.”
McKinney pleaded guilty on June 24 to the involuntary manslaughter and felony firearm charges. The third count for discharging a firearm causing injury or death was dismissed.
In addition to the two-year prison sentence, McKinney was ordered to serve three years of probation and complete 80 hours of community service. He will also be required to pay nearly $2,000 in court fees.
