YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP – A 45-year-old man was taken into custody on Thursday after an incident the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office is calling a “domestic kidnapping.”
Deputies were dispatched to the area of Seaver Drive near Joe Hall Drive in Ypsilanti Township around 4 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from the man’s girlfriend, who said he was refusing to let her out of the vehicle.
Upon arrival, officers located the 42-year-old woman in the front passenger seat and observed the man preventing her from getting out of the car. Deputies determined the situation to be an active kidnapping and tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the man fled in the vehicle, leading to a police pursuit.
Deputies say the man nearly struck several law enforcement officers and endangered countless motorists during the pursuit before he was ultimately stopped near Clark and Golfside roads in Pittsfield Township.
The woman was able to escape the vehicle before officers stopped the driver, who was arrested without incident. Officers say the two individuals, both from Britton, Mich., are in a domestic relationship.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
