Dearborn, Mich. – A 53-year-old man was shot by Dearborn police Friday night after officers said he came out of his home armed with a long gun following reports of a disturbance on the city’s west side.
The shooting happened on New York Street before 11 p.m. Police said they received several calls about a man outside, causing a disturbance and yelling “die” repeatedly.

When officers arrived at the home, the man came outside with a long gun, according to police. Officers then shot, and hit him.
The man was taken to a hospital and treated for injuries that are not life-threatening. No one else was hurt.
On Saturday, remnants of police tape were still on a pole on the street and bullet holes marked the side of the house where the 53-year-old lived.
A family who lives across the street said they heard the shots and saw officers outside the home.
“At first we kind of looked at each other and thought that it might’ve been fireworks, but that seemed unlikely,” said neighbor Mary Zieschang. “So we looked outside and I saw someone crouched down by a car with a rifle aimed at the house.”
Zieschang said the man who was shot had generally been friendly and would wave and talk, but she knew he had been struggling recently.
“I know that he really struggled with the loss of two loved ones in the past year and he was looking for help,” she said. “There were a lot of moments where he needed a hug and he was very heartbroken.”
