Boy, 14, fatally shot outside of Niles apartment complex
BERRIEN COUNTY, MI – A Niles teen was shot and killed late Thursday, May 12, during a confrontation outside of an apartment complex, police said. Niles police responded just after 11 p.m. to several 911 calls reporting gunfire near Arbor Trails Apartments on North Fifth Street, with one of the callers reporting someone had been shot. Witnesses told police that they were walking with the victim when a pickup truck entered the complex parking lot and drove past them. The pickup truck returned and the occupants got out. After a brief confrontation, one of them pulled out a handgun and shot the teen, police said.

Emmett Township police say the attempted robbery happened around 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 6, near the intersection of Main Street and Bonita Avenue. Around that time, a man approached a person, sprayed them with a chemical and then attempted to steal their money, Emmett Township police said. Emmett Township police did not detail what the chemical was nor whether the victim suffered any injury in the attempted robbery. PORTAGE, MI -- The Crossroads Mall in Portage was evacuated because of a bomb threat and police are using dogs to check for any explosives. Portage police said mall security personnel received the threat. Portage Public Safety officers then responded to the mall and and helped employees evacuate the mall. Two bomb-sniffing dogs were called to the scene to go through the mall, but police have not found anything. Police have advised the public to avoid the area, but also say there is no public threat.

FLINT TWP., MI – An 80-year-old man shot and killed a person who broke into his West Bristol Road home on Thursday night, according to Flint Township police. Police were dispatched shortly after 8:45 p.m. Thursday, April 21, to the 1000 block of West Bristol Road for the report of a shooting. A 31-year-old man had broke into the home and was confronted by the 80-year-old homeowner, police said. The homeowner shot and killed the intruder. Flint Township Police were assisted by the Michigan State Police, Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Burton Police Department, Metro Police Authority of Genesee County and the City of Flint Police Department.
