Michigan’s statewide early in-person voting period ends Sunday ahead of the Aug. 4 primary, but some local jurisdictions will continue offering early voting on Monday.
A new change in Michigan election law allows local jurisdictions to extend early voting through the Monday before Election Day, though it’s optional and must end by 4 p.m.

The following communities in southeast Michigan are offering early in-person voting on Aug. 3:
- Harrison Township (Macomb County)
- Erie Township and the city of Luna Pier (Monroe County)
- Lincoln Park (Wayne County)
- Van Buren Township (Wayne County)
early voting can continue through the Monday before Election Day, but only if a jurisdiction opts in; it must end by 4 p.m. Monday to allow e-pollbook downloads for Tuesday.
More than 1 million voters have already voted early or with a mail ballot as of 7 a.m. July 31 — a turnout rate of 14% of the state’s active registered voters, according to the Michigan Department of State.
The agency is advising voters to return their mail ballot as soon as possible to their local clerk’s office, at a secure drop box, or by putting it in the tabulator themselves at their early voting site or at the polls on Election Day.
Returning a ballot by mail is no longer recommended because of potential postal delays. A ballot not received by 8 p.m. Aug. 4 will not be counted, the agency said.
Eligible Michigan residents can register to vote or update their voter registration through Election Day by visiting their local clerk’s office with proof of residency.
