Sterling Heights police defend Flock cameras as City Council raises privacy concerns
Sterling Heights police defended the department’s use of Flock license plate reader cameras during a City Council meeting Wednesday, as some council members and residents raised privacy and data-sharing concerns.
Police Chief Andrew Satterfield said the cameras capture images of license plates and vehicles at major intersections and roadways, but do not identify people, use facial recognition or provide officers with personal information about drivers.
Monroe woman, 10-year-old killed in multi-vehicle crash
A 56-year-old Monroe woman and her 10-year-old passenger were both killed in a traffic crash involving multiple vehicles Wednesday evening.
The crash occurred around 7:12 p.m. on S. Custer Road, west of Plum Grove Drive in Raisinville Township. According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the 56-year-old victim — identified as Amy M. Beason — had come to a stop in to turn into a private driveway when her 2025 Honda HR-V was struck from behind by a 38-year-old Dundee man driving a 2010 Ford F150 pickup.
Firefighters battle large blaze at Troy church
Fire personnel are on the scene of a 4-alarm fire that broke out inside a Troy church early Thursday morning.
Emergency crews responded to Troy Church of Christ on Trombley Road around 3:15 a.m. After entering the building initially, the roof reportedly suffered a partial collapse, which required firefighters to try and put the fire out from the outside. The building was unoccupied when crews entered.
Canton Township man pleads guilty to attempted murder in stabbing of mother, siblings
A Canton Township man accused of stabbing three of his family members in 2025 has pleaded guilty to one count of assault with intent to murder. Derek Attee Alesmaily, entered the guilty plea Wednesday in Wayne County’s 3rd Circuit Court.
As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed the remaining charges, including two additional counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, three counts of felonious assault and two counts of assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer.

Scattered showers and a few non-severe thunderstorms are moving out of Southeast Michigan this morning, bringing a brief break from the wet weather. While many communities will dry out for a time, the atmosphere will remain noticeably humid.
As temperatures warm this afternoon, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to redevelop as low pressure and a cold front arrive. Severe weather is not anticipated, but any storm could produce brief heavy downpours.
