INKSTER, Mich. – A police officer fatally shot a murder suspect during a shootout Thursday in Inkster, Michigan State Police said.

State troopers went to the scene around 6 p.m. after reports of an officer-involved shooting at Colgate and Wellington streets.

An MSP spokesman said the officer came across a man suspected of murder walking on Colgate Street, and the man fired shots. The officer returned shots, striking the man.

"He was actually walking when law enforcement saw him," MSP Lt. Mike Shaw said.

The murder suspect was killed, but no one else was injured, police said.

Police also arrived at the homicide scene, which was nearby on Frederick Court, the MSP said. Shaw said the victim was a man.

"Male suspect," Shaw said. "All males. Male victim for the homicide, male suspect (in the shootout)."

Shaw said it's unclear if there was any relationship between the homicide victim and the man who was shot by police.
