DETROIT – A federal prosecutor who worked on the case against former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and is currently working on a corruption case in Macomb County has been charged with assaulting his mother, court records show.
Michael Bullotta was charged April 12 with misdemeanor domestic violence after an incident on April 9 in which he is accused of assaulting his 78-year-old mother.
"We have faith that the system will produce a just outcome," acting U.S. Attorney Daniel Lemisch said in a statement. "In the meantime, we have the utmost confidence in Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Bullotta’s ability to carry out the important work of the office."
Bullotta is a long-serving U.S. attorney in Detroit. He's mostly known for being a key member in the prosecution of Kilpatrick.
The federal prosecutor has been ordered to avoid all direct and indirect contact with his mother following the charges.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Department arrested Bullotta after a close family friend provided an image of the 78-year-old woman's bruised hand. Bullotta is accused of shoving his mother to the ground and striking her.
Bullotta is currently leading a corruption case out of Macomb County. Despite the domestic violence charges, he continues to work at the federal courthouse in Detroit.
