DETROIT – About 700 Detroit children spent their Sunday picking out clothes, toothbrushes and school supplies — all for free — ahead of the first day of classes.
The Back 2 School Store returned for its 13th year, organized by volunteers from the National Council of Jewish Women Michigan. The free store was set up like a mini mall — just for kids — giving them the rare chance to shop entirely on their own terms.

Kids take the lead
No parents were allowed inside the gym. Instead, each child was paired with a personal shopper, giving them the freedom to pick out exactly what they wanted.
“They get to choose whether it’s a blue shirt or a red shirt or a green pair of pants,” said Sandy Matz, co-chair of the Back 2 School Store.
Children from kindergarten through 5th grade got to pick out brand-new clothing, and grabbed school supplies — all purchased through fundraising and grants.
More than just supplies
For many families, the event offered more than just free items. It lifted a financial burden for parents who needed help getting their children ready for the school year.
“It’s a blessing. I appreciate it a lot,” said Dashae McCray, a Detroit parent.
Matz said the experience can be deeply emotional — for the children and the volunteers alike.
“In the past we’ve had children that have cried. They’ve just been so overwhelmed and overjoyed,” Matz said. “We give them a toothbrush and toothpaste and a little girl said well now I don’t have to share one with my sister.”
The moment illustrates what Matz says many people take for granted — that for some children, these are the first everyday items they’ve ever had to call their own.
One young shopper, Mikel McCray, made his priorities clear after browsing the supply tables.
“I got glue,” he said. “I’m going to go glue some glue.”
