JJ the Field General is ready for Opening Day at Jimmy John’s Field

Beloved field dog trained to pick up bats, bring water to umpires

UTICA, Mich. – Metro Detroit’s United Shore Professional Baseball League (USPBL) is kicking off their season Friday at Jimmy John’s Field, and JJ the Field General is ready to show off his skills.

The minor league baseball field is a second home for JJ, the dog trained to pick up baseball bats, bring water to umpires and charm the crowd. The 5-year-old red golden retriever spends his days on the field, and returns home with USPBL President Dana Schmitt.

“He’s the star of the show here,” Schmitt said. “He’s got his own plush toy, he’s got a bobblehead, he’s got baseball cards ... he loves working more than anything.”

The beloved field general will perform for the first time this season at the league’s Opening Day on Friday, May 20.
