A Metro Detroit credit union, the FBI, and four local police agencies are looking for some crafty thieves. The thieves are attacking automatic teller machines all across the area with brute force and quick timing.
Man killed in apparent attempted robbery near ATM in Kent County, police say
KENT COUNTY, MI – A Kentwood man was shot and killed late Tuesday, May 24, possibly after an attempted robbery at an ATM, sheriff’s deputies said. A motorist reported hearing a gunshot around 10:30 p.m. on South Division Avenue, south of M-6, in Byron Township. Kent County sheriff’s deputies found a 50-year-old man who was deceased in a pickup truck. Early investigation suggested the man was fatally shot after an attempted holdup at an automated-teller machine, police said. GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- A former driver for Brinks is headed to trial next month after he allegedly stole more than $1 million from several ATM’s in the mid-Michigan region last year. Carman allegedly stole the money during a six-week span that started on Nov. 15 and ended on Dec. 28 when he stopped showing up for work. Investigators accused Carman of taking the money out of various machines while working for Brinks in which part of his duties were to transport money from various banks. However, roughly $22,000 of the stolen money has not been recovered. Carman allegedly told investigators “that his father had recently passed away and his mind was not right when he was stealing the money,” according to the criminal complaint.

This is the fourth such ATM theft in the area in less than a month. On Feb. 27, a drive-thru ATM was ripped from its mooring at United Financial Credit Union at 4685 State St. in Saginaw Township. Chief Duffett said the March 18 matter may be related to the Saginaw Township ATM theft. Bridgeport Township police and Michigan State Police are working together on the investigation, he said.

SAGINAW TWP, MI — Police are investigating the theft of an ATM from a Saginaw Township credit union, just a day after two similar crimes occurred in neighboring Genesee County. About 3:20 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, officers responded to the United Financial Credit Union at 4685 State St. “It appears somebody used a pickup truck, wrapped a chain around (the ATM), yanked it out of its foundation, and dragged it some distance into a neighborhood,” said Saginaw Township Police Chief Scott A. Malace. A resident found the ATM lying on the ground in the 1800 block of South Westwood Street, about a half-mile from the credit union, Malace said. Anyone with information on the Saginaw Township ATM thefts may call police at 989-793-2310.

Smith III, 52, is set to receive a lethal injection at 6 p.m. CDT at a southwest Alabama prison for his conviction in the kidnapping and murder of 22-year-old Sharma Ruth Johnson. Prosecutors said Smith had a shotgun when he abducted Johnson in October 1991 from an ATM location in Birmingham.

Deputies responded to people trying to break into an ATM at 5:21 a.m., Aug. 23, at Chase Bank, 615 Baldwin St., in Jenison, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said. The Chase Bank security was watching the theft attempt remotely and called to report the burglary. The truck used to rip open the ATM was stolen from Kent County earlier Monday morning, police said. The case is under investigation and police ask anyone with information to call the sheriff’s office at 616-738-4000.
