Detroit Edison senior Ruby Whitehorn is named a girls basketball McDonald’s All-American
Detroit Edison Public School Academy senior Ruby Whitehorn was announced as one of 24 McDonald’s All-Americans girls basketball players on Tuesday afternoon. Whitehorn is a Clemson commit and the only player from Michigan selected to the girls or boys McDonald’s All American Games set for March 29, 2022. Whitehorn was one of the 764 boys and girls athletes from across the nation who was selected as a finalist for the honor, including one of eight girls from Michigan, as she continues to add to the high-profile excellence of the Detroit Edison Public School girls basketball program. As a junior, Whitehorn averaged 19.75 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 3 assists per game last season. The McDonald’s All American Games will be played at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.

The 6-foot-9 superstar forward for Ypsi Prep Academy was named to the Jersey Mike’s Naismith All-American team first team for the 2021 season. Bates, considered the nation’s top 2022 high school prospect, is also a finalist for the Naismith Player of the Year award, which is expected to be announced on Wednesday. This was the second year in a row that the Michigan State commit earned All-American honors from Jersey Mike’s as he was a second team selection in 2020 as a sophomore at Ypsilanti Lincoln. Five-star Michigan commit Caleb Houston was also named second team All-American, while fellow Michigan commit Moussa Diabate and Michigan State commit Max Christie each earned honorable mention recognition. Michigan basketball’s top-ranked 2021 recruiting class has produced three McDonald’s All-Americans. In the 2020 class, former Michigan five-star forward commit Isaiah Todd was named a McDonald’s All-American, but he later opted to play professional basketball instead. Montverde and IMG Academy’s seasons are both over, while Grand Rapids Christian’s finally tipped off this month. The 6-foot-4 Bufkins is the first Michigan prep named to the team since Muskegon’s Deyonta Davis in 2015. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the McDonald’s All-American game will not be played for the second consecutive year.
