White House briefings will now include an American Sign Language interpreter
An American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter will attend every daily White House press briefing, Biden administration press secretary Jen Psaki announced on Monday. The decision, which has already been celebrated by advocates, will make the briefings more accessible to those who are deaf or hard of hearing. The Trump administration did not include ASL interpreters in the majority of its press briefings. In September, the administration was ordered by a federal district court to include an ASL interpreter for public briefings that addressed COVID-19, according to The Associated Press. All of the inauguration events earlier this month included ASL, live closed captioning, streamtext captions and audio descriptions for online coverage of the events.
