CNN has best ratings day ever for Capitol attack

NEW YORK โ€“ The attack on the U.S. Capitol last week brought more viewers to CNN than any other single day in the network's 40-year history. CNN averaged 5.2 million viewers last Wednesday, eclipsing its previous high of 5.1 million on Election Day 2016, the Nielsen company said. During the storming of the Capitol itself on Wednesday afternoon, CNN averaged nearly 9 million viewers. MSNBC had 3.67 million, Fox News Channel had 3.1 million, HGTV had 1.12 million and Hallmark had 1.05 million. ABC's โ€œWorld News Tonightโ€ led the evening news ratings race, averaging 9.2 million viewers.

Original executive producer Don Hewitt often ran โ€œ60 Minutesโ€ as an island unto itself.

Networks cut away from Trump's White House address

NEW YORK โ€“ ABC, CBS and NBC all cut away from President Donald Trump on Thursday as he spoke from the White House to make an unfounded accusation that the presidential election was being stolen from him. Trump was more subdued Thursday, yet offered a litany of complaints about โ€œsuppressionโ€ polls, mail-in voting and fraud that he never specified. Cordes said there is no indication of a substantive number of illegal votes cast, and said Trump's reference to votes arriving late was โ€œanother falsehood.โ€MSNBC cut away from Trump to anchor Brian Williams. โ€œThere are no illegal votes that we know of, there has been no Trump victory that we know of.โ€After ABC ended its coverage, the networkโ€™s White House correspondent, Jonathan Karl, also said there was no evidence of illegal votes. But especially in this election.โ€While CNN kept Trump on the air, a chyron displayed under him said, โ€œWithout any evidence, Trump says he's being cheated.โ€Anchor Jake Tapper looked weary when it was over.

After tense night, election mystery remains for media

A man stops to watch election returns on electronic billboards in Times Square, Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020, in New York. Cable and broadcast news divisions followed the story closely, even as they learned that election night coverage was a relative dud with viewers. An estimated 56.9 million people watched coverage over 21 networks during primetime hours Tuesday, down sharply from the 71.4 million viewers on election night 2016, the Nielsen company said. For weeks, media outlets had warned that Americans would need patience on election night and beyond, and that turned out to be their most accurate prediction. Even if Biden won the presidency, Democrats were sure to face questions about why the race was so close and why predicted gains in Congress didn't materialize.

At town hall, Biden blasts Trump's 'criminal' virus response

Biden faced a half-dozen questions about the coronavirus and a potential vaccine in the town hall from moderator Anderson Cooper and audience members. The town hall was the first time that Biden had faced live, unscripted questions from voters since winning the nomination. Trump participated in a town hall Tuesday in an auditorium in Philadelphia. Trump signaled he'd been watching the town hall before he took the stage for a rally in Misonee, Wisconsin, on Thursday night. โ€œTheyโ€™ve got cars ... itโ€™s the weirdest thing Iโ€™ve ever seen.โ€Trump's ABC town hall was held inside a half-empty auditorium, with attendees socially distanced and wearing masks.

At town hall, Biden blasts Trump's 'criminal' virus response

The president should step down,โ€ the Democratic presidential nominee said to applause from a CNN drive-in town hall crowd in Moosic, outside his hometown of Scranton. Conventions highlight aggressive fact-check efforts

Both Maddow and CNN's Daniel Dale aired lightning-round fact-checks following President Donald Trump's acceptance speech on Thursday night. (AP Photo/Chuck Burton, File)NEW YORK Rachel Maddow ended her fact-check mission with a lightning round after President Donald Trump's nomination acceptance speech 12 corrections in about a minute. You can't win. Some of the efforts also stretch the definition of fact-checking, like when MSNBC interviewed Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan after a convention speech where South Dakota Gov. There he goes, lying again, anchor Sean Hannity said in cutting off a speech by former President Bill Clinton. Maddow's anchor colleague, Joy Reid, said as the convention's third night was coming to a close that she saw why it was necessary.

Convention-covering networks challenged by competing stories

Republicans decided the show must go on and, for the most part, television networks followed. The convention is taking place in the shadow of huge stories that are happening right now, CNN's Anderson Cooper said. Networks, after giving extensive coverage to the Democrats last week, are cognizant of being fair to the Republicans. The president has been showing up every night, the president could talk about it. But former Republican Sen. Rick Santorum, also a CNN contributor, said Republicans were there to try and reelect President Trump and that has to continue to remain their focus.

TV's unconventional night capped by raves for Michelle Obama

(Scott Olson/Pool via AP)NEW YORK After a night in which television struggled to keep up with the Democrats' virtual convention, networks were rewarded with the most traditional of political events a powerful speech. This will not be like any convention we have seen before, ever, CNNs Anderson Cooper said at the opening of his networks coverage. Segments spent on broadcast networks previewing speeches by Obama and Sanders seemed like time-wasters when there were other things to show. Wallace's colleague, Dana Perino, stumbled into an unfortunate word choice in an effort to convey enthusiasm for Obama's address. Four years ago, when Hillary Clinton was nominated, 25 million people tuned in to the first night.

Coronavirus upends conventions, changes TV coverage

LOS ANGELES The Democratic and Republican conventions will lack for crowds but not television coverage. The Democratic meeting will be virtual, with Biden planning to make his acceptance speech from Wilmington, Delaware. Broadcast networks ABC, CBS and NBC plan an hour of nightly coverage of the conventions at 10 p.m. EDT. CNN's commentators for the Democratic meeting include Van Jones, Jennifer Granholm, Andrew Yang, and Scott Jennings. Commentary for the Republican convention will be handled by Rick Santorum, David Urban, Amanda Carpenter and Granholm.

In sprawling Capitol, leaders struggle to keep virus at bay

The lack of tracking was highlighted this week when a GOP lawmaker, Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert, found out he had contracted the virus. Fearing Gohmert's frequent refusal to wear a mask could have caused other members and staff to become infected, Pelosi and Capitol officials quickly issued broad new mask requirements for the House. The dilemma for Congress is similar to the one facing workplaces and schools as they struggle to reopen. Pelosi and McConnell cited those front-line workers when they rejected Trump's offer earlier this year to send rapid tests for lawmakers to the Capitol. Let's expand access to rapid testing on Capitol Hill, but also throughout the country, Van Hollen said.

Hot news cycle leads CNN to best ratings in 40 years

The others in this space are political talk channels, and so even when they're talking about these stories, they're talking about the politics of the stories. CNN has its share of political talk, especially on its increasingly opinionated prime-time lineup of Anderson Cooper, Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon. During the breaking stories, CNN responded by assigning more of its top people, like Wolf Blitzer, to weekend work. It has simulcast the CNN International network overnight in the U.S., Zucker said. The ratings of the past three months proved those viewers still return to CNN when there is important news, he said.

Some New York news shows back, but many hosts work remotely

Monday represented a key phase in New York City's reopening, with many offices bringing employees back for the first time. Despite the CBS and Fox moves, most news employees continue to work remotely, and the television programs that originate here have a patchwork of approaches that have quickly become familiar. A majority of the show hosts on MSNBC including Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski and Willie Geist of Morning Joe work remotely. Other morning shows have varied approaches. Hoda Kotb of NBC's Today show has worked out of that show's Rockefeller Center studio, but most of her colleagues are at home.

Trump as thug or hero? Depends on what network you watch

(AP Photo/Patrick Semansky)NEW YORK It was a split screen for the ages on MSNBC Monday: on the left side, President Donald Trump talking about restoring law and order. The president seems to think that dominating black people, dominating peaceful protesters, is law and order, CNN's Anderson Cooper said. Trump has the full authority to use the federal government to go into states to restore order, Fox's Sean Hannity said. Criminals and domestic terrorists are using George Floyd to try to murder America, host Laura Ingraham said.
