ANN ARBOR -- Michigan beat San Diego State at Crisler Center on Saturday afternoon, the basketball game serving as an undercard for both schools’ athletic departments. Michigan and San Diego State had never met on the hardwood before Saturday, but the two programs have history together. Former Michigan head coach Brady Hoke has been honored for leading San Diego State to its best record in program history. The 63-year-old was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year on Wednesday after the 19th-ranked Aztecs finished 11-1 during the regular season. They will face Utah State in the conference championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday. This is the second time Hoke has been named Coach of the Year at SDSU. The Ohio native began his second stint at SDSU last year, finishing with a 4-4 record.

Cole, who finished his collegiate career with Mississippi State, spent the 2020 season on Miami’s practice squad. Cole, one of the top recruits in the 2015 class, signed with the University of Michigan and then-coach Brady Hoke. He transferred to East Mississippi State for a season, then played two seasons at Mississippi State. EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker tried to avoid saying the name of his in-state rival ahead of their matchup this weekend, calling Michigan “that school up/down the road” four times during his Tuesday press conference. In his first season as Michigan State’s head coach, Tucker is stoking the flames of an already-hot rivalry between the Wolverines and Spartans. ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan's football season has been a disappointment from basically every single angle. With a win against Maryland Saturday the Wolverines will qualify for, and surely receive an invitation to, a bowl game. But qualifying for a bowl game could upgrade the 2014 season from total disaster to serious disappointment. Most importantly, focusing on a bowl game would buy the university more time in its search for an athletic director and potential replacement for Hoke. What we learn from this flashback is that fans have power, because the fans ultimately drive the financial and future success of Michigan football.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The starting running back for the Michigan Wolverines, Fitzgerald Toussaint, was arrested on DUI charges Saturday night in Ann Arbor after having a blood alcohol level over the legal limit of .08. PARK RIDGE, Ill. – According to reports, the Big Ten Conference announced on Wednesday that University of Michigan head football coach Brady Hoke was chosen as the Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year. Hoke is the sixth first-year coach to earn the McClain Coach of the Year award, which dates back to 1972.
