ANN ARBOR -- Michigan beat San Diego State at Crisler Center on Saturday afternoon, the basketball game serving as an undercard for both schools’ athletic departments. Michigan and San Diego State had never met on the hardwood before Saturday, but the two programs have history together. At the other end of the floor, Matt Bradley led San Diego State with 22 points, but scored just eight in the second half. San Diego State scored with 14:28 left in the second half to get within four before the Wolverines took control. Hoke is back at San Diego State; his team will kick off its conference championship game right around the time the basketball game is set to end. Martelli said that, regardless of who is in the game, San Diego State’s defensive effort is “inspiring.” The half-court offense, though, is “still a work in a progress” according to Dutcher. EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker tried to avoid saying the name of his in-state rival ahead of their matchup this weekend, calling Michigan “that school up/down the road” four times during his Tuesday press conference. You can hear Tucker calling Michigan “the school up/down the road” in the clips beneath each quote. “This game against the school down the road is not just another game, so it’s really special to me," Tucker said. “We know that it’s always a physical game," Tucker said.

Michigan battling for bowl eligibility against Maryland Saturday

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan's football season has been a disappointment from basically every single angle. With a win against Maryland Saturday the Wolverines will qualify for, and surely receive an invitation to, a bowl game. But qualifying for a bowl game could upgrade the 2014 season from total disaster to serious disappointment. Most importantly, focusing on a bowl game would buy the university more time in its search for an athletic director and potential replacement for Hoke. What we learn from this flashback is that fans have power, because the fans ultimately drive the financial and future success of Michigan football.
