Hepatitis outbreak in children: CDC lists symptoms parents should look for

The Centers for Disease Control is alerting parents to the signs of hepatitis as it continues to investigate a rare outbreak among children. The agency said this week it is investigating 109 hepatitis cases that infected children under 10-year-old across the country. Ninety percent of the children affected had to be hospitalized, 14% resulted in a liver transplant and five children died. Parents are advised to be on the lookout for symptoms of hepatitis in children and contact their healthcare provider quickly if they have concerns. If you have any questions about your child’s health, call your child’s healthcare provider,” CDC said.

CDC will ‘significantly’ change COVID mask-wearing guidelines

The Centers for Disease Control is set to “significantly” ease mask-wearing guidelines put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19, according to published reports. The change means most Americans will no longer be advised to wear masks in indoor public settings. Citing sources familiar with the matter, the AP reported the CDC will move away from looking only at COVID case numbers towards a holistic approach that includes caseloads, hospitalizations and hospital capacity. Under current guidelines, some 95% of U.S. counties are considered areas of substantial or high transmission, meaning masks are recommended. COVID case numbers in America are plummeting after a spike due to the omicron variant, a highly transmissible strain that caused less severe illness and fewer hospitalizations.

CDC’s new COVID vaccine guidance: Wait longer between shots

The Centers for Disease Control has issued revised guidance for COVID-19 vaccines, expanding the recommended time between the initial two vaccine doses. New data indicates some people ages 12-64 – particularly men ages 12-39 – would benefit from getting their second COVID-19 vaccine dose eight weeks after their first shot. The previous recommendation was to wait at least three weeks between doses. People who have already received their vaccines at the three or four-week intervals remain “well protected – especially if they have received a booster dose,” ADPH said. People aged 12 and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should receive three doses of their vaccine series as well as a booster at least three months after completing their initial vaccines.

Fully vaccinated people are about four and a half times less likely to get infected with COVID, according to the CDC’s latest calculations. The activities of people who are fully vaccinated isn’t the big concern of health officials at this point.
