Chase Pearson looks to bring defense, size, grit in Red Wings debut
Nearly seven years after being drafted 140th overall by the Detroit Red Wings, Chase Pearson will make his NHL debut tonight against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena (7:30, Bally Sports Detroit). Pearson will center a line with Adam Erne and Sam Gagner. “He’s a guy who can play center, so that allows for some flexibility,” coach Jeff Blashill said. Against a team like the Islanders, the bigger the bodies the better.”Blashill said Pearson must play within his skill-set. “I think obviously there’s times where you are playing well and other times you’re struggling a bit, but I think overall I’ve had a decent (season) so far,” Pearson said.

Larkin set up Veleno for a power-play goal to put Detroit up 4-1 with 5:16 remaining in the third period. The Red Wings led 2-0 after the first period. Thomas Greiss started in goal for the Red Wings and stopped all eight shots he faced in 31:34.

Kirill Tyutyayev scored a pair of goals as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Dallas Stars 5-4 Thursday to open the NHL Prospects Tournament at Centre I.C.E. Tyutyayev is a small (5-9, 146) but highly skilled forward the Red Wings drafted in the seventh round in 2019 (190th overall). The Red Wings led 5-1 in the second period before the Stars tightened in the third period with a pair of goals from Riley Tufte. Victor Brattstrom played the entire game and made 30 saves for the Red Wings, who were outshot 34-22. The Red Wings face the St. Louis Blues on Saturday (7 p.m., live streamed on DetroitRedWings.com).

The Detroit Red Wings re-signed restricted free agent center Chase Pearson on Thursday to a one-year contract. Pearson does not need to be placed on waivers to be sent to the minors and will again be a restricted free agent after the 2021-22 season. The 6-foot-2, 209-pounder is the only Red Wings draft pick from 2015 still with the organization. The Wings also signed free agent center Pius Suter this offseason, adding to Detroit’s depth in the middle. Detroit has four remaining restricted free agents: forwards Jakub Vrana, Adam Erne and Givani Smith, and defenseman Filip Hronek.
