ANN ARBOR, MI - Children in need of supplies for the upcoming school year can get stocked up during a Back to School BBQ hosted by Community Action Network. School supplies, including nearly 200 backpacks, free books and gift cards for purchasing clothes, have been donated from area businesses and churches, . Backpacks are filled with supplies that are age-appropriate and by grade level, Director of Bryant Market & Facilities Fayiza Nabilsi said. In addition to providing school supplies, the event features community organizations, like the library, Washtenaw County Health Department and DTE Energy, who are providing information on getting booster shots, getting a library card and paying your energy bill. Donors of backpacks and other supplies for the event include DTE Energy and Verizon.

ANN ARBOR, MI — From housing stabilization to educational programs and community building, the Community Action Network offers a wide variety of supportive services to tenants of Ann Arbor affordable housing complexes. The nonprofit agency is now carrying on its work at a new community center at the Ann Arbor Housing Commission’s Creekside Court apartments at 3425 Platt Road. The Housing Commission has partnered with CAN to operate the community center, which includes gathering space, a commercial kitchen, food pantry and computer center. This is CAN’s seventh community center and fourth in partnership with the Housing Commission, Moore said. ANN ARBOR, MI — Ann Arbor is gearing up to make big strides on expanding the supply of affordable housing in the city, putting a new 20-year tax for that purpose to use. In recent years, the Housing Commission also added 26 new affordable housing units on Miller Avenue and Maple Road. The Housing Commission now manages 17 affordable housing properties in the city with 548 apartments, plus 2,089 rental subsidy vouchers.
