U.S. airlines are pressing their case against requiring coronavirus testing of passengers on domestic flights. The CEOs of several major airlines met Friday, Feb. 12, with the White House's coronavirus-response coordinator to lobby against a testing requirement. They say it would further undermine air travel, which is still running at less than half its pre-pandemic level. Airlines reacted with alarm, however, when CDC officials raised the possibility of testing the much larger number of passengers on domestic flights. DETROIT – For a lot of people, 2021 is going to be the year to get back to traveling. AirlineRatings.com analyzed crash records and safety compliance data of more than 100 airlines to put together a list of the 20 safest airlines for 2021. Other U.S. airlines in the top 20 were Southwest Airlines at no. 15 and United Airlines at no. The safety ratings also took a look at which airlines are handing the pandemic the best and ensuring everything is being done to keep passengers safe.

The FAA declined to comment on the ruling, instead pointing to Dickson’s past comments on the case, including that he wasn’t deeply involved in it. The pilot, Karlene Petitt sued Atlanta-based Delta in a Labor Department administrative proceeding in 2016. The judge said Delta failed to produce evidence of any shortcomings in Petitt’s performance as a pilot. Dickson, a former pilot, was Delta’s senior vice president of flight operations when Petitt raised her concerns. Dickson said in his deposition that Petitt “raised some important issues,” but he disputed her claim that Delta pressured pilots to fly when tired.

The Transportation Department issued a final rule Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2020, covering service animals. It decided that only dogs can fly as service animals, and companions that passengers use for emotional support don't count. The number of animals on planes took off several years ago, and a cottage industry grew around providing papers, doctor's notes and even dog vests for support animals. Delta Air Lines says it carried about 250,000 animals including service dogs in 2017 and about 600,000 last year. The Transportation Department stood by an earlier decision to prohibit airlines from banning entire dog breeds as service animals.

The airlines and their unions are putting pressure on Congress and the White House to approve more taxpayer help for their industry. However, the fate of the proposal is uncertain because negotiations between the White House and congressional Democrats over a larger virus-relief package have stalled. Meadows said Trump has spoken with people at American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Sara Nelson, the president of the Association of Flight Attendants, said Meadows remarks indicate that the lobbying by airline unions is working. When Washington first approved airline aid, it was designed to help the carriers survive until air travel and ticket sales improved.

DALLAS American Airlines said Tuesday it will eliminate 19,000 jobs in October as it struggles with a sharp downturn in travel because of the pandemic. The furloughs and management layoffs announced Tuesday are in addition to 23,500 employees who accepted buyouts, retired early or took long-term leaves of absence. U.S. air travel plunged 95% by April, a few weeks after the first significant coronavirus outbreaks in the United States. In March, passenger airlines got $25 billion from the government to save jobs for six months, and American was the biggest beneficiary, receiving $5.8 billion. American plans to fly less than half its usual schedule and only one-fourth of its lucrative international service in the fourth quarter.

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian has put out what some are calling an aggressive enforcement of mask-wearing on the company’s flights. ”If you board the plane and you insist on not wearing your mask, we will insist that you don’t fly Delta into the future,” Bastian told Today in an interview Wednesday. The CEO said the stance is one he’s taking in order to keep crew and passengers safe during the pandemic. As the coronavirus pandemic continues, Delta flights have been booked to 60% of their capacity, Today reported after speaking with Bastian. “We’ve had some customers indicate that they have (an) underlying condition that makes wearing a mask dangerous for them,” Bastian said.

The Orlando Police Department said in a statement that officers responded to a suspicious person report Saturday morning at the airport. Officers asked the passenger for identification and for her boarding pass. She said she had thrown her ticket away and did not have Identification, the police statement said. Delta Air Lines apologized to Flight 1516 passengers in a statement "for the delay after a person not ticketed for that flight was removed from the aircraft."

The airline raised its 2019 profit forecast to between $6.75 to $7.25 a share, well above the $5.67 it earned in 2018. At the start of the year it had been predicting a per-share profit of only $6.00 to $7.00. But Delta does not have any of the 737 Max planes in its fleet, nor has it ordered any. The 737 Max probably won't be able to return to service until the end of the year, meaning continued problems for Delta's rivals. This past Sunday, at the end of the US Independence Day weekend, Delta generated the most sales in a single day in the airline's history.

Unlike American Airlines, United and Southwest, Delta Air Lines was not forced to cancel flights in the quarter due to the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max because the airline doesn't own that plane. Delta said that its total revenue grew between 8% and 8.5% for the quarter that ended Saturday. Profits should also hit the top end of its guidance since profit margins should be about 1% better than expected. Shares of American, United and Southwest were also narrowly higher on Delta's signal of a strong fare environment.

Flight cancellations to and from the Dominican Republic are soaring, according to travel analytics firm ForwardKeys. New bookings for July and August to the Dominican Republic from the United States have fallen by 74.3% compared to the same period in 2018. At least 10 American citizens have died in the Dominican Republic in the last year, according to the US State Department, victims' families and the involved resorts. He denied Americans are canceling their vacations to the Dominican Republic.
