The state of Michigan is in the upper tier for census returns at 67.8 percent. The city of Detroit is at 47.2 percent, the citys census director is hopeful it can at least get that up over 50%. Michigan is tied with Iowa for third place for the highest census response rates in the country, according to the census website. The national response rate is 61.5% and Michigan has a 67.8% response rate as of June 18. Minnesota is in first place nationally with a 71% response rate and Wisconsin isnt far behind with a 68.5% response rate. Keweenaw, Lake, Mackinac and Oscoda counties have response rates of about 30% or below -- the lowest response rates in the state. Detroits census response rate has a history of being low.
Population decline predicted for Detroit because 2020 census field operations put on hold
DETROIT After announcing last week that 2020 census workers would begin going door to door, the US Census Bureau said on Tuesday that would only be happening in portions of Michigan already allowed to open some close proximity businesses. Census workers were scheduled to start going door to door to more than 100,000 homes this week, leaving questionnaire packets on doorsteps and staying socially distant. Just because census workers aren't out in the metro area, doesn't mean people can't still answer questions. It ensures Michiganders struggling to recover are able to stay fed, stay in school and stay afloat.
