Michigan woman who shot cat with crossbow bolt gets probation, chance to avoid felony record

TAWAS CITY, MI — An East Tawas woman who shot her neighbor’s cat with a crossbow — a grisly wound the feline survived — has the chance to avoid having a felony stain her record. If the defendant successfully completes the terms of the judge’s sentence, he or she avoids having a criminal record. The conviction stems from Shipman shooting a crossbow bolt into an orange cat named Oliver, owned by Wilber Township resident Eric R. Erickson. After discovering Oliver in such a wounded state, Erickson called several neighbors to see if any of them knew how his cat had been shot. Sex offender gets jail time, probation for abusing two Bay County girls more than a decade ago

Bay County Circuit Judge Harry P. Gill on Monday, Jan. 24, sentenced Daniel G. Grischke to five years of probation. Gill further ordered Grischke to serve the first 330 days of his sentence in the Bay County Jail. Grischke must also register as a sex offender, something he already had to do from a prior conviction. As a result, he must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. TAWAS CITY, MI — An East Tawas woman accused of shooting her neighbor’s cat with a crossbow bolt has pleaded guilty as charged. Taylor R. Shipman, 23, on the morning of Monday, Jan. 24, appeared in Iosco County Circuit Court and pleaded guilty to third-degree killing or torturing an animal. The charge is felony punishable by up to four years in prison.

Sex offender pleads no contest to assaulting 2 Bay County girls more than a decade ago

BAY CITY, MI — An 33-year-old East Tawas man accused of sexually assaulting two Bay County girls more than a decade ago has accepted a plea deal. Daniel C. Grischke, who is already a registered sex offender, pleaded no contest to two counts of assault with intent to commit sexual penetration before Bay County Circuit Judge Harry P. Gill on Aug. 31. Court records indicate two girls alleged Grischke sexually assaulted them between June 30, 2005, and Jan. 21, 2009. Both girls were younger than 13 at the time, while Grischke’s age would have been 17 in 2005 and 20 on the 2009 date. Grischke in November 2008 was convicted in Bay County Circuit Court of assault with intent to commit sexual penetration.

Michigan woman charged with felony for allegedly shooting cat with crossbow

TAWAS CITY, MI — An East Tawas woman is charged with a felony for allegedly shooting her neighbor’s cat with a crossbow. Taylor R. Shipman, 23, surrendered to authorities on Monday, July 26, and has been charged with one count of third-degree killing or torturing an animal. The charge stems from Shipman allegedly shooting a crossbow bolt into an orange cat named Oliver, owned by Wilber Township resident Eric R. Erickson. The next morning, Erickson took Oliver to Tawas Animal Hospital for treatment. Michigan man pleads guilty to crashing into, killing bicycle-riding teenager

STANDISH, MI — An East Tawas man has pleaded guilty-as-charged to crashing into a bicycle-riding teenager, fatally injuring him in the process. Mark Elliott, 63, on Wednesday, July 14, appeared before Arenac County District Judge Richard E. Vollbach Jr. and pleaded guilty to moving violation causing death. Elliott’s charge stems from a crash that occurred the afternoon of Aug. 31 at the intersection of U.S. 23 and Beach Road in East Tawas. Earlier on the day of his death, he had begun the automotive program at the IRESA Tech Center in Tawas City. Newcome was a member of the Oscoda Baptist Church and volunteered at the Oscoda Wurtsmith Airport’s Air Museum.
