DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings held their own five-on-five but lost the special teams battle Friday and suffered a familiar fate against the Florida Panthers. Aaron Ekblad scored a pair of goals and Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves as the Panthers defeated the Red Wings 3-2 at Little Caesars Arena. Rookie Jonatan Berggren and Robby Fabbri scored for the Red Wings. They are 18-2-0 in their past 20 meetings with the Red Wings. The Red Wings couldn’t convert or generate much on two power plays (three shots).

Robby Fabbri scored with 2:42 remaining in the third period to snap a tie and the Red Wings went on to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 at Little Caesars Arena. Bobby Ryan, making his Red Wings debut after missing the season opener with an injury, also scored. Jonathan Bernier made 29 saves as the Red Wings (1-1) bounced back from a 3-0 loss in the season opener, in which they were outshot 43-14. The Red Wings continue their season-opening four-game homestand with a pair of games against Columbus, Monday (noon) and Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).

Red Wings forward Filip Zadina and defenseman Filip Hronek are returning to Detroit to prepare for the NHL season following productive stints in the Czech League. Zadina’s coach with HC Ocelari Trinec, Vaclav Varada, told reporters Tuesday that the Red Wings terminated the loan with the Czech team. Training camps for the seven non-playoff teams, including the Red Wings, could start as soon as Dec. 31, a few days before the 2020 playoff clubs hit the ice. HC Ocelari Trinec tweeted that Zadina will fly to Detroit on Friday. Zadina had eight goals and six assists in 17 games for HC Ocelari Trinec.
